One picture per word, drawn once, used for ever

The concept registry gives every word the Almanac defines one picture that never changes, so a viewer learns it once and recognises it in every video. Here are the first 14 of those pictures in the cut-out look you approved, each standing on a floor that suits its place. Each one folds up, plays the one move that explains the word, holds, and folds flat again.

Your job here

Why these 14 first

They are the words the first Almanac episode (bounces) and the webinar actually say: the road from the sender to the reader, the ways an email comes back or quietly vanishes, where it lands, and the clean. Every one of them already had a drawing in the webinar (the road, the gate, the door, the mail server desk, the trays, the verdict pots, the house held up by people), so they were converted into the cut-out look, not invented. The words, glosses and pictures come from the concept registry, and each links to the Almanac question that defines it.

The dictionary, first batch

email

A message your sending server hands to the receiving server, which holds it until your reader collects it.

The picture: One envelope leaving a desk and travelling the road to a door. Everything else in the series happens along that road.

From the webinar: M-12 The fillable envelope, M-02 The road to the door · D-271

Almanac 001.001.001

ESP

The company whose platform you send email with, so you do not have to run your own mail servers.

The picture: The sending desk at the near end of the road, where the envelope starts, drawn apart from the door at the far end.

From the webinar: M-02 The road to the door, M-12 The fillable envelope · D-272

Almanac 009.001.001

mailbox provider

The service your reader receives mail with, such as a consumer or workplace inbox. It decides where your message lands.

The picture: The door at the far end of the road, with the gate in front of it that decides what gets through.

From the webinar: M-14 The doors street, M-18 The gate with its columns · D-273

Almanac 001.010.001

deliverability

Whether the mail you send reaches the inbox, not just whether the receiving server accepted it.

The picture: The road from the email to the door. A gate asks whether it arrives, the door asks whether anyone is there.

From the webinar: M-02 The road to the door, M-16 The journey line (live talk) · D-274

Almanac 002.001.001

bounce

A message that comes back instead of being accepted, with a reason attached.

The picture: An envelope reaching the gate and being handed straight back, with a reason slip attached to it.

From the webinar: M-15 Envelope row, arrive and flip (live talk), M-18 The gate with its columns · D-275

Almanac 015.001.001

hard bounce

A bounce that is permanent. The address does not work and will not start working.

The picture: The returned envelope stamped once, and the door it came from closing for good.

From the webinar: M-15 Envelope row, arrive and flip (live talk), M-14 The doors street · D-276

Almanac 015.001.002

soft bounce

A bounce that is temporary. Something got in the way this time, and the address might take the message later.

The picture: The returned envelope going back to the same door again later, and being taken the second time.

From the webinar: M-15 Envelope row, arrive and flip (live talk), M-14 The doors street, M-31 Time charts: the calm line, the staircase and the month wall · D-277

Almanac 015.001.002

dead domain

A domain with no working mail server, so everything sent to it bounces.

The picture: The mail server desk, with no desk. The parcel arrives where there is nothing to sign for it.

Drawn differently: There is nothing to draw where the desk should be, so its empty place is a dashed outline on the floor, with only the sign left standing.

From the webinar: M-13 The parcel and the mail server desk · D-278

Almanac 005.008.001

delivered

The server took your mail. That is all it means, and it is not the same as somebody seeing it.

The picture: The clerk signs for the parcel, says thanks, and drops it straight into the bin behind the desk.

Drawn differently: The registry says a clerk signs. Systems are never faces in this style, so the desk signs on its own: the signature appears on its clipboard.

From the webinar: M-13 The parcel and the mail server desk · D-279

Almanac 002.002.002

inbox placement

Where an accepted message actually lands: the inbox, a tab such as Promotions, the spam folder, or a quarantine area the reader almost never checks.

The picture: Past the gate, the envelope drops into one of several trays, only one of which a person ever opens.

From the webinar: M-37 The inbox tab peel, M-18 The gate with its columns · D-280

Almanac 016.001.001

spam filter

The system at the receiving end that decides whether your message reaches the inbox, another folder, or nowhere.

The picture: A sorting arm at the gate, sending each envelope to the inbox, to another folder, or to nothing.

From the webinar: M-18 The gate with its columns, M-37 The inbox tab peel · D-281

Almanac 011.001.001

list hygiene

Keeping a list accurate and permission based, so the addresses that damage your reputation are not on it.

The picture: A house held up by a crowd of people with real arms. The floor it stands on is the list, and the house tilts as people vanish.

Drawn differently: The crowd is egg people. Their looks are placeholders until Vy picks the cast.

From the webinar: M-09 The house held up by people, M-07 A person with real arms, M-10 The house topple · D-282

Almanac 005.001.001

list cleaning

Going through a whole list and sorting every address into keep, monitor or suppress, based on engagement, where it came from and signs it has gone bad.

The picture: The dot grid pours into the three verdict pots, each pot filling with its own reasons.

Drawn differently: The registry also says each pot fills with its own reasons. That second beat waits for the label names to be drawn as pieces.

From the webinar: M-25 The dot grid that turns grey, M-23 The three verdict pots, M-24 Verdict emblems, 2x, with the white outline on dark · D-283

Almanac 005.004.001

suppression list

The addresses you keep on record precisely so you never send to them again.

The picture: The third of the three verdict pots, with its lid closing. Nothing leaves it.

Drawn differently: One envelope tries to come back out and the lid holds, so you can see that nothing leaves it.

From the webinar: M-23 The three verdict pots, M-24 Verdict emblems, 2x, with the white outline on dark · D-284

Almanac 005.005.001

The floor kit: floors change per scene

Your call of 3 Oct: the floor suits the place. Every floor keeps the style bible's rule, no edge and no corner, its pattern closing up into the distance and melting into the haze, and only the surface changes. The same person walks on each, so you can compare them. This is written up as a rule proposal for the style bible.

The grid, with a road drawn on it. The road is where an email travels.

D-259

Stone and cream floor tiles in a checker.

D-260

Carpet tiles in two soft teals, the lines barely there.

D-261

Wooden boards running away from us, with a rug.

D-262

Raised floor panels, with a vent panel every few.

D-263

Grass, with a gravel path winding through it.

D-264

The pieces, saved for reuse

Every piece, floor and picture on this page is a reusable kit file with a design ID, so the next video takes it from the library.

Is this the right way to draw the dictionary?

Built by review-kit/examples/visual-dictionary.gen.py from 01-library/concept-registry/concepts.json and the kit in 01-library/assets/characters/cutout-style/ (floors.js, dictionary-pieces.js, dictionary-scenes.js on cutout-stage.js). People are the egg rig, with placeholder looks until Vy picks the cast. The stage uses brand colours. Wood, grass, rugs and warm props use the character palette proposal of 29 Sep, still waiting for your yes. Verdict colours appear only on the pots and the dots that stand for a verdict.
